About North Haven

A Vibrant Island Community

North Haven is a year-round island community with a vibrancy in both summer and winter that is unparalleled in almost any small mainland town. It’s a place to ease into as the ferry crosses twelve miles of Penobscot Bay — an hour-long trip that inexorably encourages shedding the weight of mainland concerns and breathing freely. There are choices here. One can immerse in the plethora of activities and social events, or embrace solitude and quiet on a deserted beach or on myriad paths along the shore or through shaded glades.

Families who have called this island home for hundreds of years still reside here, together with generations of seasonal residents who consider this place their respite and recharge. It has a unique identity, a culture unto itself, and a beauty that is both unbounded and unequaled.

It’s your choice: solitude or social, relaxation or recharge, a full day of activities or a day full of tranquility.

We board the ferry (17 cars, thrice daily year-round) in Rockland, about 90 miles from Portland Jetport (PWM) and 4 miles from Knox County Airport (RKD), leave Rockland Harbor, pass Rockland Light and Breakwater, and approach North Haven via the iconic Fox Island Thorofare, the epicenter of North Haven fishing, water sports, and sailing. The ferry dock is located ‘downtown’, the hub of terrestrial activity. Dawn Redwood Farm is on the north shore of the island, affording extraordinary privacy but just 10 minutes from the island’s lively center (restaurants, community center, marina, yacht club, post office, shops) and 5 minutes from the North Haven Grocery.

Come see for yourself!
